There wouldn’t be an ACH Network without ACH Origination. The Origination function involves sending credit-push and debit-pull transactions to Receiver accounts. This is a unique characteristic of the network in that others either push credits or pull debits. Originating Depository Financial Institution (ODFI) warrant to each Receiving Depository Financial Institution (RDFI) and ACH Operator that originated Entries are in compliance with the ACH Rules including proper authorization and formatting. This responsibility is highly critical and the ODFI assumes liable for not only what it Originates, but also for what its Originators and Third-Party Senders Originate as well.

In this session, we dive into the ins and outs of the roles and relationships of an ODFI touching on topics such as general responsibilities, ODFI warranties, prerequisites to Origination, authorization of Entries, provisions for specific Entry types, prenotifications, Micro-Entries, Reversals, reclamations, notification of changes, returns, and Third-Party Senders. Understanding these functions and what they mean to the ODFI is paramount in operating on the Originating side of the ACH network.
