How does the industry accurately detect, track, report, and mitigate fraud and scams when inconsistent definitions and terminology are used by participants? It’s impossible to get accurate fraud and scam numbers when everyone providing those numbers is speaking a different language. This lack of consistency spurred the Federal Reserve to develop the Fraud and Scam Classifiers. Regardless of payment type, these classifier models allow participants to designate fraud and scams in a consistent manner, leading to more accurate reporting of the impact of specific types of fraud and scams on the financial industry. In this intermediate-level session, we’ll provide an overview of the Fraud Classifier and Scam Classifier models and discuss how they work independently and together to improve fraud and scam reporting, detection, and mitigation.
At the end of this session, learners will be able to:
• Instruct others in their institution on the benefits of using the Fraud and Scam Classifiers and how to use them
• Use the Fraud and Scam Classifier models to classify the type of fraud and/or scam their institution is experiencing
• Collect the data obtained via the Classifier models to develop more accurate reporting on fraud and scam types
