What happens when an item cannot be immediately processed and needs special handling? This session will delve into those exception situations focusing on decisioning items processed through the Federal Reserve. Often the question is, should the exception be handled as a return or an adjustment? How does timing factor into this decision? We will review both the return process and adjustment process, as well as return reason codes and adjustment types. We'll also review Operating Circular 3 which governs the details of the Federal Reserve Banks' handling of cash items and returned checks.
At the end of this session attendees will be able to:
• Discuss Operating Circular 3
• Explain the return process versus the adjustment entries
• Describe rules and regulations that impact exception handling
